The KC CALL

TERRY ROWE

Terry Dewain Rowe, aka “Chipper” was born in Kansas City, Kas., on November 26, 1948, to the union of Ivry Jean (Davis) Rowe and James Rowe. He was their first born.

He was raised in Kansas City, Mo., spending his early years playing with and protecting his younger sisters and brothers. He was a big brother to all. He attended the Galilee Baptist church where he gave his life back to Christ at an early age.

He was among the first Black students to integrate Paseo High school, where he lettered in football as a Tight End. As a 16 year old, he graduated from Paseo High in 1965, and went on to enlist in the U. S. Navy. Still a minor, he had to convince his doubting parents to give him permission to join. After serving in the Vietnam War, he received an honorable medical discharge in 1967.

Rowe always had an entrepreneurial spirit. So, after the Navy, he owned several bars and night clubs, the most notable being “A Place to Play.”

In 1965, he was blessed with his firstborn child, Denise Rowe. Although being young at the time, he took pride in being a father. It was later in 1969, when he met the love of his life and life partner, Karen Savwoir. Although never legally tying the knot, until his passing they were inseparable. If he was Clyde, then call her Bonnie. In 1978, they welcomed his namesake, Terry Rowe II.

It was his love for sports and family that led him to coach his son’s many sports teams growing up. Terry was also a very proud bragging grandfather. His grandchildren, Jordyn and Trey became the new highlight of his later years, enjoying long talks and advising them on life and how to accomplish goals.

To his family, he was loving, sweet, and kind. He never missed an opportunity to tell his loved ones how much he cared. Given the chance, he would talk your ear off for hours about sports, family, or just about the day to day. Terry, the original “Fun Guy”, enjoyed life. As stated earlier, he was an avid sports fan. Many weekend mornings you could find him listening to and calling in to comment on A.M sports radio with the alias “Mark”. Everyone knows KU was his team. The Rowe Family gatherings were full of stories and tall tales about his many escapades. During those family gatherings, he would share stories about the Rowe Family history.

As the first born, the one who witnessed the births of sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, greatnephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he leaves a void in the family and will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Elvira and Ivry Davis; paternal grandparents, Arizona and Daniel Rowe; father, James Rowe; brother, Gary Rowe; nephews, James C. Rowe and Gary Rowe II.

He is survived by his life partner, Karen Savwoir; mother, Ivry Jean Rowe; children: Denise Rowe and Terry (Autumn) Rowe II; grandchildren, Jordyn Rowe and Terry Rowe III; sisters: Sherri Brown, Teresa Brooks, Pamela (Bradford) Mason, Lisa Henderson, Rowe, Rochelle Rowe, Audrina (Tony) Union; brothers: Lamarr Lewis, James Craig Rowe, Michael (Hazel) Rowe, Daniel Rowe and Donald Rowe; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, greatnephews, cousins, and loved ones.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the Lawrence A. Jones Funeral chapel, Kansas.

Interment, Leavenworth National cemetery, Leavenworth, Kas.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the chapel.
