Family Honors 2021 Homicide Victim With Neighborhood Clean-Up Sat.

On August 28, 2021, Tarey L. Johnson Sr. was murdered in broad daylight in front of his family home at 30th & Olive St. in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a fourth generation resident of the Key Coalition Neighborhood and he left behind four children who feel the void of their father‘s absence every day. His murder remains unsolved.

On May 28th, the family and friends of Tarey L. Johnson Sr., along with community sponsors, are hosting a neighborhood clean-up and block party in memory of their fallen loved one. This will be promoted as a single day event focused on community clean-up and building neighborly connections.

Johnson’s family wants to gather family and friends to beautify the community while giving hope to family members who have experienced loss due to violent crime.

“The family and friends of Mr. Johnson Sr. asks the community to join us in taking action and reclaiming our neighborhoods,” Myeisha Wright, sister of Tarey L. Johnson Sr., said.

Black residents of Kansas City are disproportionately murdered and live in heavily blighted communities. According to 2018 U.S. Census data, Black people have a poverty rate of nearly 25%, as compared to an only 12% poverty rate for white people. When we look specifically at the Troost dividing line, we see that on the east side of Troost Avenue, which is over 88% Black, an average of 36% of people live in poverty whereas on the 88% White west side,only an average of 10% of people live in poverty.

Event Details: Saturday May, 28th, at 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. he location is 30th and Olive St., Kansas City, Missouri.

The clean-up area is from 30th St. to 31st St. on Prospect Ave. to Brooklyn Ave. The clean up will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Block Party begins afterwards with food, music, bounce houses, and more.
