The KC CALL

Ready To Talk About Gun Laws

As a parent of school age children there are a number of conversations we have to have like, look both ways before crossing the street; don't get into cars with strangers nor do you talk to a stranger; eat all of your lunch at school; follow directions and do what the teacher tells you and keep your hands to yourself . And the list goes on.

Never did I think that our dinner table conversation would consist of school shootings and instructing our children what they should do if they hear gunshots in their school. As parents concerned about the well-being of our children and families lawmakers should be just as concerned about the safety and well-being of the general public.

Passing universal background checks before the purchase of firearms and the passing of legislation to make that more difficult should be a no brainer!

If Missouri lawmakers can spend more time focused on creating safeguards for voting issues that don't exist under the guise of voter fraud and making it more difficult to vote than tightening up laws which prevent people with mental health issues from obtaining a firearm, then something is wrong, We either are lax in our duties as a society in giving elected officials an agenda when we send them into office or elected officials primary focus is to get re-elected rather than public safety. If This is the case, then they need to go.

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley said, “We've got to do everything we can to put the people who commit these kinds of crimes behind bars and send the message that we are not going to tolerate violent crime of any kind,” Hawley said. “That includes especially violent crime with firearms.” Correct me if I'm wrong, but in all but 22 states in the U.S. a person can get the death penalty or in all states a person can get life without the possibility of parole regardless of whether it is state of federal crimes and it hasn't served as a deterrent. So what makes him think it's going to change anything? The issue is not what to do AFTER a crime is committed. The problem is to put some things in place BEFORE a violent act is committed.
