baptized at the Antioch Baptist church, where Reverend Porter was her pastor. In 1959, she along with her husband, Hezekiah, united with the First Baptist church, 500 Nebraska Avenue, Kansas City, Kas., under the leadership of Dr. E. A. Freeman. She began working with the trustee board in 1972, and her service continued until she was 99 years old. In 2009, she became a 50-year member of the First Baptist church. She truly loved her pastor, Reverend Cedric L. Rowan and her First Baptist Church family. That love was always so warmly and genuinely returned.

Waiting for Elsie on the other side are her parents, as well as her husband, Hezekiah French Sr.; four of her sons, John Barnett, Kenneth Barnett, Thomas Barnett, and Hezekiah French Jr. are also there. Her beloved granddaughter, Arletta Donese Gray, will greet her with a big, beautiful smile. Her brothers and sisters Elvira, James Jr., Virgie, Geraldine, and Henry will meet her there too.

Remaining on this side with loving memories of her life are Elsie’s daughters, Yolande White; Leatha Ingram (Johnny); and Maeday Howell (Robert). She also leaves her son, Michael (Elizabeth); her baby sister, Sherell Smith-Lynch; and her loving and supportive daughter-in-love, Constance Barnett. In addition, she leaves many extended family members to cherish the loving memories she left with them.

She was blessed to be the mother of eight; grandmother of 14; great grandmother of 12; and great-great grandmother of two. She was also the Foster grandparent of all those she mentored during her eight years as a Foster grandparent in the Kansas City, Kas., School district. She will forever be in the hearts and minds of those who loved and cherished her.

In September of 2021, Elsie made Aberdeen Village of Olathe her home. She was truly loved and excellently cared for there by the staff of Aberdeen, and by the wonderful nurses of Ascend Hospice until her soul took flight to her heavenly home. a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work.

She began work for Sunshine Biscuits as a production operator, where she worked for two years. She retired from WSA in 1997, after 15 years.

She married Alvin in 1958, in Boston, Texas and to this union two children were born Derrick and Karla Jernigan.

She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist church for 50+ years, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the mass choir, a Christian social worker for the church and attended Sunday school. She enjoyed studying and teaching the word of God, family gatherings, playing bingo and traveling. She also received awards and accomplishments.

Mrs. Jernigan was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Marshall Sr.; mother, Ailene Lockhart; her two children, Derrick and Karla Jernigan; brothers, Rev. Eugene Marshall Jr. and Charles Buck Marshall; and sister, Elizabeth Liz Cantrell.

She is survived by her grandson, Darryll Nelson Jr. (Shae) of Kansas City, Mo.; her brothers, Vincent Marshall and Kevin Marshall (Frankie) of Los Angeles, Cal.; her great-grandchild, Cameron Nelson; special nieces, Kendra Cantrell of Los Angeles, Cal.; and Alicia Bazzle (John) of Raytown, Mo.; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Mt. Zion Baptist church, 417 Richmond Ave., Kansas City, Kas.

Religious Service will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022, at the Mt. Zion Baptist church, 417 Richmond Ave., Kansas City, Kas.

Interment, Highland Park cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

Robert Cornell Tolbert died on May 11, 2022. He was born on November 11, 1978, in Kansas City, Mo., to Rosalind Tolbert and Daryl Gordon.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Otis and Rosa M. Tolbert; paternal grandparents, Burnett and Eliza Gordon; daughter, Beautiful K. Tolbert; best friend and mother of his children, Angela “Renee” York; brother, De’Andre E. Tolbert; aunt, Carol Britt; uncles, Robert Jones and Melvin Tolbert; cousins, Tiwana Britt, Mickell Tolbert, DeJaun Gordon, Devon Nolan and Gary Nolan.

He attended The Rock church but would also visit the Pleasant Green Baptist church with his mother and family where he accepted Christ at an early age.

He attended elementary, junior, and high school in the Kansas City, Mo., School district.

Affectionately called “Nell” by his family and friends, he loved to spend time with his daughters and the rest of his family. He never missed the opportunity to get dressed up and wear one of his many colognes. He also would debate with anyone about how good his beloved Kansas City Chiefs was against any other team.

He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters, Dajanea Courtney and Ma’Rojanea Tolbert, both of Kansas City, Mo.; parents, Rosalind and Rickey Hampton both of Kansas City, Mo.; Daryl and Pumlan, both of Des Moines, Iowa; grandfather, Robert Gibbs of Kansas City, Mo.; sisters, Tina TolbertHowlett (Marvell), Tasha Jefferson (Donell) all of Kansas City, Mo., and Tanika Jackson of Columbia, Mo.; brothers, Daryl Patterson, Ricky Hill (Quria), and Maurice Hill all of Kansas City, Mo.; special love, Michelle Peppers of Kansas City, Mo.; nieces, Ta’Riyah Howlett-Tolbert, Marriyah Howlett-Tolbert, of Kansas City, Mo., and Ly’Niah Tolbert of Phoenix, Ariz.; special cousins, “M7 Crew” and “6021 Crew”; best friend, Jeffrey Byrd, all of Kansas City, Mo.; and a host of relatives and friends.

Services for Tolbert will be held on Friday, May 27, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., at the Pleasant Green Baptist church, 340 David L. Gray

DeNeka Collins died on May 13, 2022. She was born on April 4, 1984, in Kansas City, Mo., to Teresa Bolden and Delbert Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Sharon Gordon; maternal grandfather, Pastor JC Slaughter; paternal grandmother, Ernestine Thompson; paternal grandfather, Robert Thompson; great uncle, Dan Bolden; great aunt, Katherine Greer; and three special cousins, Dasha Slaughter, Brian Bolden, and Christopher Weatherspoon.

She graduated from Excelsior Springs Technical High school with a diploma and a Nursing Assistant certification. She had a passion for caring for others so much that she pursued a career in Medical Management for over 16 years at Optum Rx.

She accepted Christ at an early age and continued her journey with Christ into adulthood as she participated in praise dance and bible study. She married Fredrick Collins of Mississippi on February 22, 2007 and spent their 15 years together until her departure. DeNeka’s smile could brighten anyone’s day. She was very outgoing, loved
