The KC CALL

Monday Niters Say The Chiefs Will Be ‘On Fire’ Against The ‘Mile-Low’ Broncos

Coach Jerry Price was excited, about the Chiefs’ third loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, last Sunday. Not only because the Chiefs lost…but because the Monday Niters’ weekly zoom meeting was interrupted this week. Computer issues on the host, Ed West’s end. Try as he may, the ever-alert Ed West couldn’t get the zoom call going… so that we Monday Niters octogenarians could “meet up”. After all, it was Monday and we have to meet up, each and every Monday night.

So, out of frustration, I had to call Jerry Price, to get his views on the game. And Jerry wasn’t the least bit disturbed nor shy about sharing his views. In fact, I could hear a bit of joy, in having exclusive time…. to opine, all by himself. No interruptions. Just him and me, and mostly him doing the talking. Even though he had predicted the Chiefs to beat the Bengals by 18, Jerry took the opportunity to “let it all hang out”… everything about the Chiefs and their third straight loss to the Bengals. However, ol’ Jerry didn’t mind one bit that he could say whatever he wanted, without interruption or interference from his fellow, highlyopinionated Monday Niters. Unexpectedly, he had the whole meeting to himself. and boy did he take advantage of that rare opportunity. Actually, it was like he was being interviewed, after one of his high school games…in the Kansas City Public Schools. He loved it.

First off, he explained the Chiefs 27-24 loss to Cincinnati. He simply said the “Chiefs made too many mistakes”. Then he criticized the Chiefs’ young defensive backs by pointing out that the Chiefs’ secondary was “just awful”. Then unexpectedly, he gave props to the Bengals’ receivers…Higgins and Chase, by calling the tandem, “tremendous”. I agreed but Jerry didn’t care one bit what I thought. He had the entire meeting, to himself and he was taking full advantage of it. It was as if Jerry was on national tv, talking about the game, and just rattling off his many opinions about last Sunday’s game. In my mind, I knew ol’ Jerry was onto something. Thus, I completely forgot about the computer glitch, altogether. Coach Price was onpoint. Clearly, I could see why he was so successful, as a high school coach. This guy recalled every single moment, about the game. In exact detail!

Now well into the interview, Coach Price really praised the Chiefs’ star running back, Isaih Pacheco and he also praised, Cincinnati’s “cool-ass” quarterback, Joe Burrow. Ol’ Joe was not moved by all the hype, bestowed on our Patrick Mahomes. Burrow just kept passing and running for first down after first down. And ol’ Coach Price just continued to lay it all “out there”…. calling on his Hall of Fame sports-playing days, at Langston University. After about twenty-five, non-stop minutes, Coach Price finally took a shot at Chiefs’ Head Coach, Andy Reid. Jerry simply said that Coach Reid should have “listened to quarterback Patrick Mahomes” and went for the first down, instead of deciding to allow “that” Butkus try for a field goal. As we all know now, that was really the turning point in the game, that the Chiefs eventually lost. I could see why Coach Price is so respected by former players and fellow high school coaches. He is a genius…he knows what it takes to win, no matter who the other team is. And it was obvious why somebody would nominate him to become a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. In the words of Alicia Keys, this guy was “on fire”.

By this time, it was ten o’clock and our technical difficulty had not been resolved but Coach Price had finally cooled down. So, I called “that” Harry Sypert to get his take on the game…but he didn’t answer the phone. I was actually going to congratulate Harry….because he was the only Monday Niter to pick the Bengals to beat the Chiefs (that’s three times in a row). But after getting Jerry Price’s analysis of the Chiefs’ loss, I rejected the thought of calling Harry. However, I did think of how blessed I have been, to be surrounded by so many knowledgeable friends…for 52 years… and specifically to talk one-onone with the legendary Coach Jerry Price. So, I just jotted down the following updates about the upcoming Alzheimer’s event…. that I would share with the guys at a later time. Maybe up at Bob’s. Those updates included:

• Congressman Bubba Cleaver has indicated he will do something special, to “move” the proposed Alzheimer’s effort along.

• Juan Tabb, executive director, down at ArtsTech, has worked up a youth component for the Alzheimer’s project, that will likely take place around the Martin Luther King holiday.

• And as instructed by Dr. Allen, I would have reported that a fertile collaboration is “brewing” with the all-important, local Alzheimer’s Association, Black Health Care Coalition, KC Health Department, University Health, some retired high school coaches and many others.

As it got later, I realized I would have to catch everyone up, given the unexpected computer glitch and certainly the Alzheimer’s project. I still had questions I wanted to ask them. I was getting really anxious and nervous. Here’s some of the questions I wanted to raise… Can we praise Ed West for his efforts to keep us in touch? Was Coach Price’s impressive words okay to print? What about the Chiefs’ next opponent, the last place, 3-9 Denver Broncos… in Denver? Wait, and we haven’t formally asked anybody for money yet….for our Alzheimer’s project. What is happening with the public zoom calls? Although a lot is going on, I still have to call Dr. Allen to keep him up-to-date. This Alzheimer’s thing is hard to handle…so many moving parts. And I’m wondering just what Bubba Cleaver Is going to do to help us pull this Alzheimer’s thing off. These thoughts and more thoughts And I got wrapped up in Coach Price’s interview…that I totally forgot to ask the other guys what will the Chiefs do against the “mile low” Denver Broncos? Now totally exhaiusted,, I decided I would ask them all, when they gathered up at Bob’s on Tuesday. So here’s what the Monday Niters had to say about the Chiefs/ Broncos game on Sunday. What a Monday! In the words of Alicia Keys, these octogenarians are still “on fire”. After all that, here’s what the Monday Niters think:
