2023 Nefertiti Honorees And Scholarship Recipients

The Greater Kansas City Chapter of Societas Docta, Incorporated honored and celebrated 12 outstanding women during their 7th Biennial Nefertiti Awards and Scholarship Luncheon on Sunday, March 19, at the Overland Park Marriott Hotel, Overland Park, Kansas.

The theme for this year was “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories,” which aligns with the theme of the national celebration of Women’s History Month.

These 12 accomplished, influential, and outstanding beautiful “Queens” shared their amazing unique stories of how they have passionately served their community and others in their respective fields. They represent the virtue of leadership, excellence, service, strength, determination, and endurance.

Honored were: Marshaun R. Butler - Health, Myra D. Everette – Local Leadership/Military, Dr. Sally Ellis Fletcher –

Higher Education, Julee Jonez – Mass Media, Mya JoDa’Jones – Entrepreneurship, Stacey Knoell - Local Leadership/Politics, Donna Peyton – Public Service, Sgt. Salatha Solomon – Community Service, Carrie Stapleton - Mass Communication, Quiana Thomason - Health, Dr. Helen Jenetta Walker - Religion, and Dr. Carmaletta M. Williams – Civil Rights.

Five Mentees, Lana McKinney, Rochelle Parker, Shonte Reed, Jabrea Strickland, and Mary Helen Jackman, were each awarded a $1,200.00 scholarship from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Societas Docta, Incorporated to assist in providing financial support in pursuit of earning their doctorate. For over sixteen years, The Greater Kansas City Chapter of Societas Docta, Inc. has worked to mentor African American women enrolled in doctoral programs pursuing their doctoral degrees in various disciplines.

The presence

of former Nefertiti Honorees was acknowledged and recognized. Five Societas Docta Mentees that recently graduated and received their doctorate were recognized and congratulated. They are Dr. Janine Fells. Dr. Denisha Johnson, Dr. Michelle Lee, Dr. Yvette Richards, and Dr. Yolanda Thompson.

The Greater Kansas City Chapter president is Dr. Jessie O. Kirksey.
