Sylvia Lee Wood, 84, died on Friday, March 10, 2023. She was born on November 8, 1938, to Elizabeth Pernell and Phil Malone.

She was born and raised in Fayette, Miss. In 1955, she married Floyd Wood Jr., and moved to New Orleans, La.

Mrs. Wood was trained as a nurse and worked in New Orleans until 1961. She relocated to Kansas City, Mo., where she lived the majority of her life. She continued her nursing profession at Research Medical center, Baptist Medical center, St. Joseph hospital and Children’s Mercy hospital. Her passion was

Wilma Ellen Smith, 84, of Kansas City, Mo., died on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at the Research Medical hospital in the care of Crossroads Hospice care.

She was born on May 31, 1938, in Pittsburg, Kas., to Wilbur Kent and Naomi Francis Elizabeth (King) Berger. She was the third born of 10 children. She had a twin brother Wilbur “Buddy” Kent Berger Jr. The Berger siblings, eight girls and two boys, started their journey at 1204 North Joplin.

She attended Pittsburg High school and graduated in 1957, where she received many accolades in track and field. She was the fastest runner on the team. She also sang in the school’s Orchestra Choir for three years. Although she was small, she was quick with a strong voice.
